Pozzani Grand National UK Championship

Tyson Nelson won Round 2 of the Pozzani Grand National UK Championship in spectacular style on Saturday, at a meeting which was held at Silverstone as part of the Moto GP weekend. The oval track that was built at the off-road complex for this event, saw 56 riders compete in a timed qualification session in the afternoon, to try make the top 36 rider field for the evening event .

In front of a packed house the early heats saw a lot of action, as the newly laid track took a while to settle down, In the first heat race Tyson Nelson was looking strong, as he won beating fastest qualifer Richard Mason. Further heat wins went to Marco Belli, Adian Collins, Peter Boast, Tom Woolley, Alessandro Scalabrin, Tim Neave and Glyn Pocklington, with the top 24 riders progressing to the heats.

The first Semi saw a clash between Collins and Nelson – the top two in the Championship – and it was Nelson who took the hole shot and lead Collins, Scalabrin, Boast and Ben Baker. Collins pushed Nelson during the early stages but as laps wound down Tyson pulled away and took the win from Collins, Scalabrin and Boast with Jacopo Monti taking last spot through to the final.
Semi two was a superb win for Italy’s Fabrizio Vesprini who headed “Magic” Mason, Woolley, Belli and Vittorio Marzotto into the Grand Final. With only two transfer places left for 12 rider Grand Final from the last chance race, it was Marco Buzzi who took the early lead but he was under pressure from Alan Birtwistle, David Haith, Tim Neave and Daz Trapmore. With two laps to go it was Birtwistle who took the lead, but Buzzi held on to take that final spot and Birtwistle earning his National Number.

The Grand Final riders walked out with their machines in front of an enthusatic crowd, many of whom hadn’t seen Flat Track before. On the front row was Vesprini, Nelson, Mason, Collins, second row Woolley, Scalabrin, Belli, Boast and the third row Monti, Marzotto, Birtwistle and Buzzi. After a few riders jumped the start they were recalled for a restart, when Vesprini got the hole shot. Woolley went down, skattering riders all over but the race continued with Vesprini in the lead from Neslon, Collins, Mason, Scalabrin and Marzotto. Nelson got past Vesprini then Collins followed him through and by lap 4 Collins was past Nelson and Mason was in third. During the next 7 laps Nelson was trying everything to get past Collins and the crowd watched with amazement as he was in and out of his seat, giving it all he’d got.
On lap Collins succumbed to his pressure and Aussie star managed to make the front again. Collins continued to fight with Mason only a couple of bike lengths behind but Tyson held on, crossing the line on his back wheel to take his first Grand National UK Championship win, with Collins second from Mason who got a fine third spot.
